Since 2004, this annual women-only 5-kilometer run has not only been a fun event but also highlighted the evolving social and economic roles of women in Ethiopia. Over the years, more than 100,000 women and girls have taken part. Elite Athletes Organization provides specialized training for women preparing for the 5K, led by female coaches from RSC Athletics Club AC, ensuring participants arrive at the start line confident and well-prepared.
Located 275 km south of Addis Ababa at 1,700 meters above sea level, Hawassa is the regional capital of southern Ethiopia, known for its stunning scenery, abundant wildlife, and relaxed vibe. The town offers ideal conditions for long-distance running, thanks to its lower altitude compared to the Ethiopian Highlands and its mostly flat terrain. Runners enjoy a unique experience along Lake Hawassa, where part of the course follows the lakeshore, adorned with fishing boats and impressive Marabou Storks.
